Swayambhu Temple is an ancient religious architecture atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley and is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. According to Swayambhu Purana (Buddhist scripture), the entire Kathmandu valley was once filled with an enormous lake, out of which grew a lotus. The valley came to be known as Swayambhu, meaning "Self-Created."
